BAKERIES, DELIS, BARS AND KIOSKS
Sicily’s sweet tradition has deep roots in the quiet kitchens of convents and monasteries. While nuns perfected the art of sweets, biscuits and desserts, monks dedicated themselves to distilling fine liquors, wines and beers.
Generations ago, some young women learned the art of traditional pastry and cakes from nuns and grandmas, while young men learned the art of distillery and confectionery by monks.
Some of them went on to open their own shops in Catania, and remarkably, a few are still open today, proudly offering the fifth generation of authentic Sicilian biscuits, drinks and liquors.
Today, these are some of the oldest bakeries, bars and kiosks in Catania still keeping the tradition alive:
- Biscottificio Arena since 1880
- I dolci di nonna Vincenza since 1997, Catania Airport Fontanarossa
- Drogheria Pavone since 1939 (watch out, grumpy owner)
- Chiosco Costa since 1890 (seltz water and sirops)
- Chiosco Giammona since 1942 (seltz water and sirops)
… some of them were masters in the art of the traditional sicilian cuisine and street food.
Tavola calda
In Catania, the tavola calda is not just a place to grab something ready to eat: it represents a true category of street food.

The “frappè alla nutella“
Finally, the worst sin of greed of which ye will repent for 3 days: frappè alla Nutella.
But what exactly is it?
It’s a milkshake with a secret touch born in Catania: the iconic brioscina Tomarchio.
The frappè was invented in the 1990s by “Uncle Lino,” the owner of a local kiosk. Today, this delicious blend has become a must-try for anyone visiting the city.
You’ll find this milkshake at some kiosks, here are our favorites:
- Piazza Trento Kiosk, the best
- Sicilian Seltz, the largest choice
- Lino’s Kiosk, since 1984, the original
- Chiosco Borgo, the iced one
