THE BEST HORSE MEAT

Catania is renowned for the longstanding tradition of abundant horse meat consumption.

Probably that comes from our agricultural tradition. The use of animals such as mules or horses for hard work in the countryside was widespread, just like cows and sheeps, when they grew old, people ate their meat.

Horse meat was cheaper than cow or veil, in addition it is very rich in iron and low in fat (mostly unsaturated).

So, what cuts of horse meat are most commonly served?

In Catania, horse meat is served in a variety of ways: from tender fillets and juicy steaks to flavorful meatballs. Every dish is strictly grilled!

Our suggestion for tasty horse meat:

  • Restaurants around the Ursino medieval Castle such as Borgo di Federico, Camelot, Artù and al Tenerissimo.
  • Butchers in via Plebiscito (Leone, Achille, Torre del Vescovo…) that grill in the street, just follow the smoke and the scent of grilled meat
  • Dusmet Da Riccardo, in front of the Marina Arches of Catania (our favourite)
